"A national study of U.S. home computer users found many users have no idea their systems are infected with viruses or spyware, USA Today reported Monday, October 25, 2004. In findings released by America Online and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 77 percent of the survey respondents believed they were safe from online threats, two-thirds lacked current anti-virus software and did not use any firewall protection. More than half said they didn't understand the difference between the two. When technicians examined the PCs of 329 respondents in 22 cities in 10 states, they found 80 percent loaded with dozens of spyware programs that track the user's browsing habits. Crooks have also begun spreading a more invasive kind of spyware, called keystroke loggers, that steal logins and passwords as the user types them in. "Extrapolating the percentages in our survey, this indicates that millions of Americans are at risk, and are already infected," said Ken Watson, president of the NCSA, a non-profit organization that educates consumers, businesses and schools about computer security."
